A Hub of Community Spirit

Over the years, the Village Hall has been the heart of our community. It has hosted countless activities and village celebrations. Many of us fondly remember the annual village fetes. Some may even recall the 1946 Victory Day programme, which featured exciting sports events, including a ladies' and gents' football match for those aged 45 and over!

The story of our Village Hall began in 1921. The first Trustees included the Vicar, the Rev. Canon Lawrence, Churchwarden William Faulke of Dilham Hall, and parishioners Alfred Saville of Hill House and Samuel Everet. The hall and its fences were built through public subscription. It was designed to serve as a Parish Room, managed by a committee of five elected by the parishioners. This space was intended for entertainments, meetings, social gatherings, and charitable purposes.

A Gift to the Community

In 1937, Edward Williams gifted land for the playing field to our village. This generous act took place on the day of the Coronation of King George VI, in memory of his wife, Elizabeth, nee Culley. Elizabeth, a dressmaker from nearby Belgrave Cottage, passed away earlier that year at the age of 92.

The 1953 Coronation Day celebration was memorable, marked by the planting of two magnificent copper beeches at the entrance of the hall. These trees stand as a testament to our community's spirit and resilience.

Growing Together

In 1972, the Trustees approached the Parish Council to accept the Trusteeship of the Village Hall. By this time, the ownership had been legally established, and since the Playing Field was already under their control, it made sense to formalise this arrangement.

The 1980s were a vibrant time for our community. Residents came together to fundraise for improvements to the Hall. They organised Bingo nights, Raffles, Fashion Shows, clay pigeon shoots, Auctions, Dances, and even a Bowl Tournament. Many residents generously donated their time and resources. Thanks to their efforts, we have the wonderful Hall we cherish today.

Modern Enhancements

In 1987, an extension was added to the Village Hall. This included a new kitchen and accessible toilets, replacing the old kitchen. A storeroom was also built. The stage has hosted many great productions, from pantomimes and variety shows to performances by the Pantaloons theatre company and various concerts.

In 2007, a new Constitution for the Dilham Playing Field and Village Hall Committee was established. This was an important step as the land was conveyed to the Dilham Parish Council as Custodian Trustees.

In 2010, we entered into a 30-year site rental agreement with the Worstead Guild of Weavers, Spinners, and Dyers. This agreement allowed them to use the base and prefab building adjacent to the Village Hall.

Looking Ahead

As we look to the future, our goal remains clear. Dilham Village Hall aims to be the central, welcoming hub for our community. We are committed to providing well-maintained facilities for events and activities. Our focus is on ensuring financial stability to support ongoing improvements and community engagement.

We invite everyone to join us in celebrating our Village Hall's rich history and bright future. Together, we can continue to create lasting memories and foster a sense of belonging in Dilham. Thank you for being a part of this journey!
